ISHAM NEWS! (27-5-2012)

Dear , With great pleasure ISHAM welcomes the Swiss Society of Microbiology as an affiliated society to ISHAM. The SSM has recently created a section of Mycology coordinated by Dominique Sanglard and aims to give more impact to mycology within international mycology societies.

We regret to announce that earlier this month one of our former ISHAM vice-presidents, Glenn Bulmer, has died. Born Canadian, Glenn has played a very important role in education of medical mycology in Asia and he has been head of the Medical Mycology Section at the University of Santo Tomas, School of Medicine & Surgery in Manila, Philippines for a long time. The next European Congress of Medical Microbiology (ECCMID) will take place in Berlin, Germany, 27 – 30 April, 2013. For information on this major event, visit the website here.

The Korean Society for Medical Mycology (KSMM) will organize its 19th meeting in Seoul, South Korea, on June 2nd, 2012. This is the website, and the program can be found here.

The 15th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICID) will be organized in Bangkok, Thailand, 13 – 16 June, 2012. For information and registration, visit the website here.

The 6th Trends in Medical Mycology (TIMM) will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, 11 – 14 October, 2013. This is one of the major congresses in medical mycology. For information, check the website here; more information will follow in due course.

The 13th International Congress on Yeasts (ICY), with the title ‘Yeasts for a Sustainable Future’ will be held in Madison, WI, U.S.A., August 26 – 30, 2012. Sessions on medical mycology and clinical applications include a Plenary Lecture by Joe Heitman and several presentations of medical interest. A Spanish-language short course on detection and antifungal resistance of invasive fungi is given in Los Andes, Colombia, 16-19 July, 2012. Information can be found here

Some announcements from the ISHAM General Secretary:

• ISHAM Council requests Working Group Coordinators to return the interim report of their WG achievements (see form here ) before June 1st to the General Secretary (p.donnelly@usa.net), so that this can be included in the General Assembly during the ISHAM congress in Berlin.
• We received a record 117 requests for a Travel Grant to attend this year’s ISHAM congress in Berlin. However, we were only able to award 25 based on the recommendation of 3 members of council who each independently rated the applications. To see if you are one of the awardees please enter the member area and click "Travel Awards ISHAM 2012".
• Because of new developments, session C14 of the ISHAM Congress on recently identified fungal pathogens has been changed and will have more the character of an open discussion. For program details of this session, contact Gerhard Haase.
• The General Assembly of the German-speaking Mycological Assiciation (DMYKG) will be held during the ISHAM congress in Berlin on 13 June, 2012, at 14.00 in room A05-06 of the BCC congress centre.
