ISHAM NEWS! (11-07-2014)

Dear , The Atlas of Clinical Fungi, 4th edition, is now available online; for subscription details and alternative electronic carriers, see here. As an introduction, 6 months free access will be given. Regular updates of the Atlas will be included in the subscription fee; the book is in constant reconstruction aiming to follow the recent literature. The Atlas contains about 568 clinically relevant species, thousands of references, and has comfortable tools for search of key words, synonymous names, and explanations of terminology. The richly illustrated book is now partly in colour.

Recent news on Aspergillus can be found at the Aspergillus Website Blog here, and a recent article on aspergillosis in patients with cystic fibrosis here.

The ISHAM Veterinary Working Group organizes a Postgraduate Technical Workshop in Milan, Italy, 3 October, 2014. The preliminary program can be found here. The workshop is a pre-congress activity of the 16th Congress of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology, see here.

The ISHAM Eumycetoma Working Group and the Mycetoma Consortium need your help! As some of you might have already noted, in 2013 mycetoma became listed by the WHO as one of the tropical neglected conditions; while this is an important milestone, moving to the top group of 17 is needed to achieve full support by WHO and raise political and donor interest. In order to move up to this list a resolution for the WHO is needed supported by proper data on prevalence and incidence from all endemic countries. This is currently lacking. If you are working in a reference laboratory or university centre in your country and you have seen mycetoma (either fungal or bacterial) in your country in the last year (even if it is only one case), please contact Wendy van de Sande as we are currently trying to build up a network to be able to collect prevalence and incidence data from several countries. Your effort will be highly appreciated.

A Workshop on Diagnostic Techniques in Medical Mycology will be organized in Manipal, India, 5-6 September, 2014. Full information can be found here.

In collaboration with the ISHAM Working Groups Veterinary Mycology and Black Yeasts, Jiufeng Sun has started a project on black fungal infections in captive and farmed fish and crustaceans in Guangdong, China. He would greatly appreciate to receive similar material from infected cold-blooded animals from elsewhere; please contact him at sunjiuf@163.com.

The next Gordon Research Conference and Seminar on Immunology of Fungal Infections will take place in Galveston, USA, 17-23 January, 2015. For information, click here and here.

The ISHAM Working Group on Chromoblastomycosis started its own website, see here. For additions, contact Peiying Feng. Note also the Symposium 100 Years Chromoblastomycosis organized in Sao Luis, Brazil, 8-10 October, 2014, see here.

A new edition of the LIFE (Learning International Fungal Education) Newsletter with interesting news items is available herel.

A new ISHAM Working Group on Nomenclature of Clinical Fungi has been initiated; a website can be found here.

The next Spring Course of Medical Mycology of the Institut Pasteur will be held in Paris, March 30 to April 24, 2015. The course will be taught in English and is aimed to microbiologists (MDs, PhDs and veterinarians) with previous practice in a medical mycology laboratory. The course will be divided into interactive lectures, bench sessions and panel discussions during 4 weeks. Application deadline is Nov. 15, 2014.  For information and registration, click here.
