RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

The AFWG pursues and fosters research through its group and network in the region. Results from several research and surveys have been published to date and a number of activities are ongoing.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

The AFWG maintains an ongoing program of educational and training workshops for clinicians and microbiologists, provides sponsored placements for individuals looking to advance laboratory science in their country, and publishes a quarterly newsletter of thought leadership and evidence updates.

Laboratory training placements

To facilitate the establishment of mycology laboratories and the improvement of diagnostic skills in the region, the AFWG organizes and supports 2 types of training courses:

• Laboratory Foundation Training course (a 3-month course for setting up mycology laboratory services), and
• Laboratory Skills Enhancement course (an advanced 1-month course for laboratory personnel seeking to acquire new skills or enhance their laboratory techniques).

Medical Mycology Training Network (MMTN) conferences

The MMTN conferences are regional and local meetings established by the AFWG to provide clinicians and microbiologists with knowledge and practical experience in medical mycoses. Each MMTN features a variety of learning activities, including lectures, hands-on practical workshops, case study discussions and interactive sessions.

Since its inception, the AFWG has conducted 5 Asia Pacific MMTN events and a number of annual local MMTNs in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand, training more than 700 delegates.

Two MMTN conferences were held in 2017 and the next Asia Pacific MMTN will be in Taiwan in 2018.

Newsletters

The AFWG produces a quarterly newsletter on updates and insights in the diagnosis and management of medical mycoses in the Asia Pacific. The newsletters are available for download from the AFWG website.
